An augmented chord is a chord built with two major thirds stacked on top ofone another Augmented chords have a tense sound are are often used as passing chords betwen two other chords.
A normal chord such as the C chord is build with three notes, 1, 3, 5, the root C. then up a third to E and then to G, the augmented chord takes the third note and goes up onehalf step to G#. Or two major thirds stacked on top of one another.
