I started learning guitar about 10 years ago and my music and chord charts came about from my search for clear basic music information to help me learn when I started playing the guitar. Over the years I found lots of the charts on the web and in books but most of them were to complicated or incomplete or poorly presented. So I started laying out my own charts and then started sharing them with others.

As I searched the web I wanted to learn the basic shapes for the major, minor, and seventh chords. I wanted to learn how to move up the neck of the guitar and play like the guys you see in real bands. Arpeggios what are they and how to play and apply them?

What are keys and simple chord substitutions, minor pentatonic and the mysterious G run, maybe a little chord theory? How to solo, a simple 101 approach? So those were the questions, my pdf music charts are what have come out of that effort. I have some more to go, but I am pretty pleased with what we have done so far and people seem to like them alot.

Along the way I also learned to play the mandolin, the ukulele and a little banjo. So those were also added to the collection. The charts are designed to be downloaded as a pdf, printed out, and three hole punched to put into your jam notebook, we also put them up in a spiral bound book and have now release them on Amazon as a real book in case you wanted real paper.

My intent was to make the charts easy to read, informative and great for when you are practicing and jamming with your friends.

Any comments that you might have on them, good or bad are welcome. Ideas for additional music charts are also great. I will be adding more charts as time goes on.

Essential Chords for Guitar, Mandolin, Ukulele and Banjo, Second Edition
So what makes up the second edition. Well this past summer I went to my Guitar Camp, SAMW (Summer Acoustic Music Week) run by WUMB in Boston and took a banjo class with Riley Baugus and learned about all kinds of other tunings. So first off I added in more tunings for the 5 string banjo and then the 4 strings banjo. Then I put my book on an iPad and realized that if your book has pages in different directions it is a pain in the neck, so I made all page vertical. I also cleaned up the design and increased the size to 8.5" x 11". Overall lots of updates and additions.

iPad version of Essential Chords is now available. To get Essential Chords into your iPad iBook shelf you can use Dropbox, or email the pdf to yourself and download in the iPad.

I have broken the site down into some major areas that have thumbnails of the different charts. Guitar Chords, Mandolin Chords, Ukulele Chords and Banjo Chords. I have also added in a resource center of some of the books that I used over the last 10 years, a gift store from the art that I drew for the illustrations, a regular store with some of our own chord and sheet music books and I am slowly building a section on how to market your music, starting with some tips on getting your videos found in YouTube.
